RUSSIA: Science 2.0, a new Russian TV channel

VGTRK is going to launch a new channel about science early next year.

In his interview with "Marker" the Deputy General Director of VGTRK Dmitry Mednikov, explained that the company is preparing a new educational TV channel on science and innovation. Working title - Science 2.0. According to Mednikov, the new channel is already "in full readiness for the start of work and wait the final approval of the Russian president" as Dmitry Medvedev was the first to support the idea of promoting innovations and technology on television at the meeting of the Commission on Modernization.

It is planed that Science 2.0 will be available on cable and satellite platforms and will target the audience of  25-54 years.  Initially there will be more foreign than local content, but by mid-2011 the share of owned and purchased content should match. The annual budget for the project is set to US$ 10 million.

If the final decision on the establishment of the project will be accepted at the end of the year, the launch could take place in February-March 2011.

HUNGARY: Prizma TV replaces the channel POEN!


The channel POEN! ceased its activity and was replaced by Prizma TV on20th of December 2010.The IKO Central Europe which produces Prizma TV as well as Film+ and Cool TV channels beleive that the rebranding of  POEN! concerns not only the name and graphic design of the channel, but will affect its programming as well.

Launched on the  Holiday Season, Prizma TV should attract a lot of new  viewers - as expected by the Director of the Operation of  the Channel- Gabriella VIDUS.

Mindshare Russia assessed the largest TV advertisers in 2010

Communications agency Mindshare Russia assessed the largest TV advertisers in 2010 (estimate covers the period from January to
November 2010).

The data obtained suggests a positive trend: in general, TV - twenty of the largest advertisers grew by 10% (in rubles) over the same period of 2009 and amounted to 35 billion rubles (Dynamics in the U.S.: +17% to $ 1,174 million).

The leading position is held by Procter & Gamble which has increased its investment by 30% over the evaluation period. Unilever (+19%) is in the second position. Henkel Group (+16%), which in 2010 replaced  L'Oreal (-5%), closes out the three  top leading advertisers on TV.

HUNGARY: Story5 - a new TV channel for women


The sister TV channel of the Story4, the channel Story5, will start to broadcast on the 4th of January, 2011.

Story5 is a thematic channel devoted to telenovelas, lifestyle and design programs which will tempt to catch the attraction of the women
viewers. The new channel will be available for around 700 thousand households in Hungary and an increase to 1 million households is expected by the end of 2011. The channel is operating on the T-HOME, PR TELECOM and TARR Kft networks.

Story5 is a TV Channel targeting ladies desiring romance and serenity-stated the Programming Manager of Story4 and Story5, Mr Borsány-Gyenes András.

RUSSIA: SGU TV changes its name


From 1 January 2011 the Russian educational channel SGU TV will change its name to Pervyj obrazovatelnyj (First educational). SGU TV started broadcasting in 1998 on the initiative of the Modern University of Humanities. The aim of the channel is to promote human values. SGU TV offers recordings of lectures and programs with the largest specialists in various fields, prominent figures in science, arts and sports.

SGU TV can be seen by viewers in Russia, CIS, Baltic region and Europe. The station operates around the clock, offering three blocks of eight hours. SGU TV Library contains over 10,000 unique recordings of lectures.

AXN Spin - A new entertainment channel for youth ??


AXN Central Europe is planning to expand its portfolio with a new channel for young people - AXN Spin during the next year (2011). 

The new channel will be available in Poland and has already got the green light from UK broadcasting authority Ofcom. Unfortunately, more specific details about the new AXN project are still unknown so that no one knows the exact start date of broadcasting, nor the markets in which the channel will be available (except the Polish one), in which languages it will be broadcast or what the program content will be.

In Poland, four AXN-branded channels are currently broadcasted: AXN, AXN Crime, AXN Sci-Fi and AXN HD. In Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Macedonia, Serbia, Montenegro and Slovenia there is entertainment channel AXN Adria available, localised to the Croatian, Serbian, Slovenian and Macedonian languages (subtitles).

RUSSIA : Soyuzmultfilm will open a documentary screening internet portal

State Film Collection Inc., (formerly known as Soyuzmultfilm) will create an Internet portal where it will broadcast documentaries, the newspaper, RBC daily, reported.

The documentaries of several production studios in Russia such as "Tsentrnauchfilm", "Lenfilm" will be digitalized and put on-line. Whether this service will offer a time limited preview or, be free of charge is still unclear.

Currently, the Russian market has a small number of companies which offer legal content to its users for free, including the latest productions.  As an example, a short time ago on the resource ivi.ru  two recently produced films "Brest Fortress " and "Dark World" were available to be viewed for free.

RUSSIA : Two Russian Telecom operators launch their own tablet PC

The Russian tablets market is booming. This week two of the most important telecom operators started sales of the new branded devices.

First, the VimpelCom Group (Beeline brand) announced the launch of  "Beeline M2" - a tablet PC, which offers users a convenient interface and access to a variety of Internet application via 2G, 3G or WiFi networks and operates with Android OS.

At the same moment Mobile TeleSystems (MTS) started sales of its "MTS Tablet PC", which also operates with Android and based on "Huawei S7 Ideos" with branded applications of the operator.

As for VimpelCom, it wants to go further in its new niche market development and plans to release its own branded tablet PC which will be more powerful then "Beeline M2"  and could be a good alternative to the mini notebooks. The new device will be operating under MS Windows 7 and will appear in the third quarter of 2011, reports RIA Novosti, referencing a company representative.

BULGARIA: The Orthodox Church to hit television

The first Orthodox channel ("PPTV") launched in Bulgaria.

As of today the channel is available on the Internet only, but there is an agreement between Plovdiv Metropolis and the local cable operator to include the channel in their packages.


The idea of the project, to broadcast live the liturgies, was began in February 2010.  "The project's aim is to enable people to witness the everyday spiritual life of God's servants and laymen in the Plovdiv Metropolis," Arsenyi, the church's manager of new media said. During the course of the year, the shows and movies on church-historical themes will be added to the programming.  Now the staff of the future cable TV channel, which consists of 20 people, is developing an idea to to run the country's first church news.

The new programming will enable the scheme to broadcast live reports from various monasteries from all over the country, air  magazines on ecclesiastical subjects conducted by the priests, children's films and on-line evening prayers and solemn prayers as well.

Plovdiv Metropolitanate is designated as the production company for the first church channel.

RUSSIA: Olonkho TV, a new thematic channel, is launched

Olonkho TV, a new thematic channel was launched in the city of Yakutsk. Entirely dedicated to the Yakuts' Olonkho epic traditions, it will broadcast on cable operator networks 16 hours a day and will show  the recordings of folk storytellers, television dramas, as well as versions and reports from the past.

Project manager Sergey Vasilyev stated "the broadcast television channel Olonkho will be on cable networks of the Republican capital, at first, the dedicated channel will be broadcasting 16 hours a day. In the beginning it will concentrate on the folk storytellers recordings, television dramas and special events coverage."

Olonkho TV will develop its own production enabling a cutting age equipment that will work in HD and 3D. However, as the publication "Il Tumen" notes, due to a lack of development of local cable networks these technical advantages will not be available yet for most viewers. Nevertheless, the sponsors hope that with the development of modern infrastructure the channel will become available in all the far eastern regions of Russia.

LATVIA : Baltic Media Alliance extends its Russian channels portfolio

Baltic Media Alliance has signed an agreement with Russian TV channel NTV, to distribute the international version of the channel - NTV-Mir-
on the cable and satellite networks in Baltic states. According to TNS Latvia, NTV-Mir is very popular among Latvian users and attracts 7% of
audience share among the country's private TV channels.

ROMANIA: Two new TV channels are about to be launched

National Audiovisual Council (CNA) has awarded a license to a new satellite TV channel:  Travel Channel Mix.

The new channel, operated by the company Mixmontan, will taget all television viewers who love nature and traveling, but also to those

who work in the tourism industry as the channel will focus on various travel destinations inside and outside of the country (26% of content
will be in-house productions). The new FTA TV channel will be launched shortly and distributed national-wide on DTH, cable and IPTV
platforms.

It has also been learned that RCS/RDS applied to Romania’s CNA for a license to operate a new satellite-delivered channel.


According to Mediafax, it will be known as 10 TV and offer a mix of movies (50%) and entertainment (50%). The start-up costs of the new
channel will be €1.179 million, followed by an annual investment of €3.5 million.

RUSSIA: Mini Movie starts on the platform NTV Plus

Today, the 6th of December 2010, the Russian satellite pay-tv platform NTV-Plus has included a new channel in its "Bazovy Plus" and "Bazovy
Plus Ukraina" packages. The station, Mini Movie, is a 24/24 channel which brings short films of different genres from around the world and
broadcasts in Russian.

RUSSIA: More films in 3D on NTV-PLUS

The Disney Company and Russia's satellite pay-TV operator NTV-PLUS started cooperation in the field of 3D content.


Recently launched TV channel, 3D by Panasonic, was licensed to broadcast the new productions as well as the classic films from Disney in 3D format. Disney Company will offer to Russian viewers the best of its animated and action films produced with Disney Digital 3D technology: Alice in Wonderland, Toy Story, Beauty and the Beast. In total the initial offer includes 18 films, and the first movies will be accessible to viewers in December 2010.

RUSSIA: New music TV channel enters on the scene

It has been learned that the company New Media Legend (a satellite provider for a majority of Russian DTH platforms, cable and IPTV operators) is preparing the launch of a new channel from the creators of the popular radio Europa Plus.


Initially the format of the TV channel will consist of music videos (conforming to format of Europa Plus radio station). Later, the channel plans to start the production of programs such as the morning show "Orange Morning,"  and the daily newsmagazine on the lives of celebrities "Star Boulevard,"  and other programs.

The TV channel appeared on the satellite Eutelsat W7 (36° e.) on November 23, 2010 and started its broadcasting in a test mode on 1 December. As of current, the broadcast channel Europe Plus TV is available viathe website http://tv.europaplus.ru/

RUSSIA: New football TV channel on the horizon ??

During the general meeting of football club leaders held, on Tuesday, Dmitri Popov, Athletic Director of FC Spartak, has shared some details about the football club's media plans. He announced that the "red-white" plan to create their own TV channel. Among other questions, the international sale of audiovisual rights was also discussed as the Russian football championship is shown in more than 30 countries worldwide, according to Dmitri Popov.

CROATIA: B.net takes over Total TV

Following an agreement signed today by the investment fund Mid Europa Partners, majority owner of Total TV, and Austrian BEWAG Group, owner of B.net Croatia, B.net Croatia will take over all operations of Total TV in the country,  including branding and market performance, which will be fully integrated into business of B.net.

According to the deal B.net will manage Total TV as its own satellite platform, which means that B.net will merge the user databases in
order to offer and equal level quality for customer and information services.
